Hydrotherapy for Dogs |
PurposeSwimming and manipulation in water allows exercise that is non-weight bearing - so recovery can start much earlier following surgery or injury. The warm water and increased range of limb movements help to promote circulation, which aids healing. The pressure of the water can have an anti-inflammatory effect, relieving pain and reducing swelling, resulting in more comfortable or more natural limb movements. Swimming for the otherwise sound and healthy animal gives a superb, complete full body workout; building up stamina and endurance levels while enhancing muscle tone, posture, performance and general condition and offering immense pleasure at the same time. It is ideal for racing, working or agility dogs or just those wanting to become fit! Swimming is also great for keeping show dogs in peak physical fitness and good hard condition. It encourages ‘good reach’ as the front legs are used to extend and pull through the water and it improves the driving action from behind due to the rear propulsion needed to swim against the jets. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise available as it uses every muscle of the anatomy from the neck, holding the head up above surface of the water, right down to individual toes as they drive and pull through the water and even to the tail which acts as a rudder. Swimming in ponds, rivers, reservoirs or the sea, though fun and a valuable form of exercise is NOT RECOMMENDED AS A FORM OF THERAPY or REHABILITATION, because COLD water causes constriction of the blood vessels near the surface of the skin, restricting blood flow and impairing muscle efficiency. Also, there is always the risk of pollution from these waters, as well as the dangers of strong tides or rip currents out at sea; cut pads from broken glass or other debris on the river bed; angry fishermen with their potentially dangerous fishing lines and fish hooks; disturbance to wild life and vegetation; entrapment in weeds or wire as well as being covered in dirty/muddy/slimy/smelly/stagnant water. |
